JOB DETAILS
The Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) is seeking highly qualified individuals for the position of Building Systems and Energy Engineer with the Division of Facilities and Construction. This division provides the essential services of maintaining, operating, constructing, and modernizing the buildings and systems that promote a safe and comfortable work environment for all LACOE staff and students.
Under administrative direction from the Director of Facilities and Construction, the Building Systems and Energy Engineer is responsible for the design, evaluation, and coordination of maintenance, upgrade, and replacement of all LACOE building systems including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), electrical, plumbing, renewable energy, emergency back-up systems, fire protection, security and alarm systems, and elevator. It is also responsible for monitoring and analyzing energy usage and promoting energy conservation.
The Well Qualified Candidate
Has the ability to:
Identify and logically evaluate information, issues, and problems
Research, analyze and interpret technical data
Engineer and fabricate mechanical solutions
Identify, interpret, and apply relevant laws and regulations
Apply current technology in building systems for improvements in efficiency and effectiveness
Manage personal time and work schedule to meet deadlines
Understand and meet the needs of customers
Keep abreast of current building systems technology and renewable resources
Facilitate mutually agreeable compromises and outcomes among various parties
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
Ensure the success of projects, including objectives, timelines, and budgets
Has knowledge of:
Federal, state, and local laws, and codes applicable to building, services, operations and maintenance construction
Principles of contract oversight
Engineering and architectural principles, including design, cost estimating, and construction techniques
Building design and blue print reading
HVAC/mechanical systems
Electrical systems, including low-voltage systems
Plumbing systems
Piping and fire protection
Energy management

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (must be met by April 21, 2014)
EDUCATION:
A bachelors degree in building systems engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a field closely related to the knowledge and ability requirements of this classification, from an institution of higher learning recognized by the Council of Higher Education Accreditation.
Experience:
Four years of engineering experience supporting building systems, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), and energy management.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Certified Energy Manager (CEM) is desirable. A valid California driver license and the availability of private transportation or the ability to obtain transportation between job sites is required.
SELECTION PROCESS
Candidates who meet the minimum requirements above will be invited to participate in a position-related Performance Test. Those candidates who are successful in the initial test part will then proceed to an Oral Technical Interview at a later date.Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
